How many decisions does a leader make in an hour? I read that a Red Arrows lead pilot has a decision to make every 20 seconds.

When the Labour Party set out its pledges to win a third term, a peak in unhealthy cynicism was pretty inevitable. Political preference has nothing to do with it; people are short on recall when it comes to plaudits for truth and success, and long on memory for disappointment, failure, lies, and abuse of power.

One of my top team is reeling from the raft of development opportunities before her. She’s been attending sessions with voice power and communications specialists at the Central School of Speech and Drama, where she’s learnt to practise breathing techniques while driving, yawn a lot – a great way to warm up the voice – and to strive to glide through life rather than settle for the natural ‘jabber’ she is.

It’s no good seeing leadership as an intellectual task. Nope. It’s not as simple as saying ‘learn these skills, read this book, put these ingredients together, and you’ll be successful’. You’ve got to put your back into it – and your heart. You’ve got to sweat, feel the pain and share the load. This time it really is personal.

You don’t have to be American Express’s size to operate globally. Globalism can live in small places, too. And you don’t have to be physically close to your customer to be intimate with them. “I buy my wine from a local South African vineyard I found on the Net,” says Dave Allen, Global CEO of Enterprise IG, who is based in London, England. “I have an email conversation with the owner. My wine arrives about ten days later. About five people run this business out of Stellenbosch. The New York Times just voted their Cabernet Sauvignon wine of the year.

It’s the Customer Century. Last century was the Supplier Century. The balance of power has shifted. Yet, like generals fighting the last war, most leaders still act as if they are leading a supplier-style ‘push’ organization, in which the important stuff – including the decisions - happens in meetings in the Head Office, with the results of the decisions then pushed out to the edges. Initiative and leadership sit in the middle; autonomy and room to manoeuvre out on the edge, where the customers are, is limited.

When President Kennedy announced that America would put a man on the moon before the end of the decade, his scientific advisors gave him a barrage of reasons why it was impossible. What he was promising simply couldn’t be done. One reason was that no fuel existed that could do the job. Kennedy switched the context from 'It can't be done because the fuel doesn't exist' to 'Then, if that is where we need to stretch, go create a fuel that will do the job’. And they did.

From its inception in 1995, strategy+business has been a magazine dedicated to the value and power of ideas. It has embodied the view that, as Victor Hugo once put it, “An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come.” We like to think that our readers are real-world users of ideas, pragmatists who understand that a conceptual breakthrough can make enormous day-to-day difference.

Context Leadership Powerful Emotions
Source: Marvin Zonis
When Winston Churchill wanted to inspire the British to victory in World War II, he stirringly asked them for their “blood, toil, tears, and sweat.” So, how do America’s corporate leaders try to motivate their people in these demanding times? They strike a bargain: If you do this for me, I’ll pay you that.
-
Context Leadership Hanging Tough

If the toughest jobs command the highest rewards, then today’s chief executives really are earning their pay. The very best ones are earning something more: the commitment of their employees, the admiration of shareholders, and the respect of students of leadership.

Context Globalization Caution Curves Ahead
Source: Marvin Zonis
With so many people acting as though the complete globalization of business is hard upon us, students of history might reflect on the 1920s and 1930s. That was the last time when barriers to international business were disappearing as fast as they are in today’s Internet-driven world. The results weren’t pretty. Businesses helped cause the worldwide depression, creating massive upheaval that led to a nationalistic backlash against globalization and helped create the environment that produced World War II.

A prominent business magazine hires a journalist to write about the chief executive of a major corporation. The man has been at the helm for several years and is considered highly effective. The journalist submits an excellent piece, capturing the very spirit of the man's managerial style. The magazine rejects it -- not exciting enough, no hype. Yet, the company has just broken profit records for its industry.
