    You don’t have to be American Express’s size to operate globally. Globalism can live in small places, too. And you don’t have to be physically close to your customer to be intimate with them. “I buy my wine from a local South African vineyard I found on the Net,” says Dave Allen, Global CEO of Enterprise IG, who is based in London, England. “I have an email conversation with the owner. My wine arrives about ten days later. About five people run this business out of Stellenbosch. The New York Times just voted their Cabernet Sauvignon wine of the year.

  • Lead From The Edge

    It’s the Customer Century. Last century was the Supplier Century. The balance of power has shifted. Yet, like generals fighting the last war, most leaders still act as if they are leading a supplier-style ‘push’ organization, in which the important stuff – including the decisions - happens in meetings in the Head Office, with the results of the decisions then pushed out to the edges. Initiative and leadership sit in the middle; autonomy and room to manoeuvre out on the edge, where the customers are, is limited.

  • The Impossible Isn't

    When President Kennedy announced that America would put a man on the moon before the end of the decade, his scientific advisors gave him a barrage of reasons why it was impossible. What he was promising simply couldn’t be done. One reason was that no fuel existed that could do the job. Kennedy switched the context from 'It can't be done because the fuel doesn't exist' to 'Then, if that is where we need to stretch, go create a fuel that will do the job’. And they did.
